Racing Queensland adds rich Summer Crown series to carnival schedule
RACING Queensland has dangled three new $500,000 bonus carrots as it ramps up efforts to make summer in the Sunshine State one of the most sought-after carnivals in the country.
Connections of any two, three or open-age horse can secure a $500,000 bonus if they have a horse that wins three of the four legs of the new Summer Crown.
The Summer Crown events will be held at Eagle Farm and Doomben on December 3, 17 and 31 and finally at the Gold Coast Magic Millions on January 14, with specific events for two-year-olds, three-year-olds and older sprinters.
“Because of the structure of the Queensland Summer Crown bonuses that we have put in place, it is possible that each bonus could potentially be won leading into or on Magic Millions race day,” Racing Queensland chief executive Eliot Forbes said. “The races are specifically programmed to provide an excellent pathway through the carnival’s black-type pattern.”
While the Magic Millions is promoted as Australia’s richest race day with $10 million in prizemoney, RQ has long been keen to boost the summer carnival and attract more interstate interest.
Most visiting horses do their lead-ups at home before travelling to the Coast for Magic Millions day, but with an extra $500,000 on offer for winning three races in Queensland, it is hoped it will force a rethink from some of the country’s top stables.
