Saturday Doomben wrap-up (8/8/15)
Saturday racing in Brisbane was at Doomben on a Good (3) surface, track played fair with no bias or pattern evident.
Looking at the results I thought BENTLES did a good job stepping up from midweek grade to lead all the way in the opener, he certainly didn’t loaf early running around average time before being able to dash away in the straight, LAUTERBRUNNEN just got too far back & is probably better suited drawing a wider gate, trying to make ground along the inside wasn’t his go.
GRENACHE was handed all the favours in Race 2 tagging the leaders to the turn, into the clear on straightening she was never going to lose. They didn’t go as hard here as may have appeared, there was plenty of pressure though with many vying for the lead, that didn’t help VIENNA QUEEN who was resuming & probably vulnerable, stick with her.
Good to see ROSENET break through in Race 3, she backed up off a strong performance last week when racing wide all the way, she did some early work again here however was too strong when it counted in the straight. GLENBAWN DAME had every chance in the run, she just couldn’t dash in the straight suggesting the 57.5kg was too much for her or a spell is needed.
Just as he did at he Sunshine Coast MOST IMPORTANT again showed plenty of fight to win Race 4 after being headed in the straight, he’s a 260K purchase who keeps on improving & can win again. Liked CRAIGLEA WANDOO’s effort here, really hit his straps last 150m & is busting for further.
The enigma that is ARCHITECT was always travelling in Race 5 & had his rivals covered a long way out, when he’s good he’s good but he can be a hard one to catch. Thought THE STOREMAN was well in at the weights & had his best chance for some time in this race, could only manage 3rd.
MORE ENERGY was ridden a treat by Glen Colless to win Race 6, he weaved his way through between runners down the straight in typical Colless style. Like this horse & he will be winning again. WALK TO THE BAR may have been disappointing on paper however that was his first run over 2000m & he’ll be a lot better for it next time around.
STEEL ZIP cantered in Race 7, his form this campaign has been as good as ever, they didn’t go hard early & once Jeff Lloyd made his move cornering that was it, last 100m or so was basically a track gallop. ANNA LIZZIE ran well fresh, she’ll win something this campaign.
Last race was a thriller with only an eyelash splitting LE VAL, VIENNA ROYALE & VOODOO BLUE MAGIC on the line. LE VAL prevailed making it 2 from 2 this campaign, he can really hit the line this horse & I doubt he’s reached his peak this preparation as yet although I’d prefer him over further next time. Don’t sack FORGOTTEN YEARS.
