BRC to lure kiwis to winter carnival
Brisbane Race Club officials will step up their bid to lure the New Zealand Derby quinella of Mongolian Khan and Volkstok’n’barrel to the winter carnival.
Trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, Mongolian Khan confirmed his rating as New Zealand’s best staying three-year-old with his one length win in the Group One Derby at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Baker has won the Australian Derby twice with Nom Du Jeu in 2008 and It’s A Dundeel in 2013 and also has a Victoria Derby trophy courtesy of 2010 winner Lion Tamer.
Baker has indicated Mongolian Khan will run in the Australian Derby in Sydney but BRC officials haven’t given up hope of getting him to Brisbane.
Volkstok’n’barrel is trained by Donna Logan who is a regular visitor to Queensland.
Racing Queensland and the BRC have introduced a series of initiatives to lure kiwi horses to Brisbane including free travel and stabling for Group One winners and a bonus for horses contesting the New Zealand and Queensland Derbys.
BRC racing manager Bart Sinclair said getting Mongolian Khan and Volkstok’n’barrel to Queensland would be a priority.
“I know Mongolian Khan is off to Sydney but it isn’t far up the highway from there. We will contact both trainers to see what else might be done to get them here,” Sinclair said.
