Gold Coast set to retain key lead-up races to Magic Millions in draft race dates proposal
RACING Queensland has circulated a draft set of race dates for 2015-16, with a proposal for the Gold Coast to retain the Vo Rogue Plate and B.J. McLachlan Stakes in the lead-up to the $10 million Magic Millions carnival.
The dates have been circulated this week to clubs, who have the opportunity to respond with their own suggestions before the dates are locked away.
Racing Queensland also sent the draft suggestions to SKY Racing and TattsBet for their feedback.
While it is proposed the Vo Rogue and McLachlan stay at the Gold Coast, the Bernborough Handicap is expected to return to its traditional home at Doomben next season.
Other changes in the proposal include Friday night racing for the Sunshine Coast through November, December and January, with the majority of those being shown on Sky Racing 1. The Sunday slots for those Friday nights would mostly go to North Queensland venues, which would also be shown on Sky Racing 1.
There is also a provision for the Toowoomba track to be rested in January and February.
“It must be stressed, they are a preliminary set and we expect multiple changes to be made, but there has to be a starting point,” Racing Queensland chief executive Darren Condon said.
“The idea is to encourage feedback to ensure we end up with a racing calendar that delivers improved wagering turnover, improved participation through attendance and starters and an improved result for clubs.”
The dates have to be locked in by April 1.
