Rudy storms home in Recognition Stakes

BRISBANE, Nov 29 AAP – In-form apprentice Luke Tarrant’s mid-race worries proved unfounded when Rudy staged a whirlwind finish to win the Recognition Stakes (1630m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Tarrant elected to ride Rudy, the $3.60 favourite, conservatively in the early stages but was concerned the gelding was too far from the leaders on the home turn.

“When he was caught wide I thought I’d go back and look for some cover rather than push forward,” Tarrant said.

“I knew he would run home strongly but I was definitely worried when he was a fair way off them coming to the home turn.”

Despite covering ground, Rudy unleashed a powerhouse finish from last at the 600m to win running away by 1-1/2 lengths from Grayson Square ($9.00).

“I’ve watched this horse from the get-go and I know he’s capable of putting in a big finish,” he said.

“When he saw daylight today he was freakish in the way he let down in the straight.”

Trainer Helen Page is weighing up a Villiers Stakes start for Rudy but is leaning towards keeping him in Queensland for the Brisbane Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on December 13.

Page instructed Tarrant to ensure Rudy was kept out of trouble.

“I said to Luke not to get stuck on the inside because I wanted the horse to have an uninterrupted run,” she said.,

“He’s been ridden from a lot of different positions so even though he was about five-deep on the turn I thought he could still make it in time.”

Trainer Brett Thompson is keen to extend the Brisbane campaign of widely travelled gelding Slate On Edge after his win in the Parnell Partners Group Handicap (1630m).

Slate On Edge has been stabled with John Meagher since making the 11-hour float trip from Gulgong in western NSW last Tuesday.

Wicked Intent’s dynamic win came at a cost for jockey Chris Munce.

Stewards suspended Munce for six meetings for causing interference to Matildare (Larry Cassidy) and Meet George Jetson (Michael Cahill) at the 800m.

The immediate racing future of Lady Echelon is in doubt after she suffered a career-threatening leg injury in the Recognition Stakes.
