Official 2YO trials could return to Qld

BRISBANE, Oct 8 AAP – Racing Queensland will consider re-introducing official two-year-old barrier trial sessions if trainers and owners support them.

For decades, Brisbane held official trial days exclusively for the new-season juveniles at Doomben and Eagle Farm which hosted up to 30 heats.

However, over the past 10 years the official trial days have disappeared with two-year-old heats instead incorporated into the usual open trial sessions.

There were only limited trials for the latest batch of youngsters in the lead-up to the first metropolitan juvenile races of the season at the Gold Coast on Saturday and many punters found the races difficult to assess given the horses came from seven different training centres and only a third had trialled in public.

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon said he was aware of punter complaints and agreed it was difficult to line up the form in the two race divisions.

“We are trying to boost turnover on our races and that was no help. But we would only consider returning to official two-year-old trials if owners and trainers want them,” Condon said.

“It is certainly something we will be talking about.”

One trainer who won’t be supporting the reintroduction of official trials is Les Ross who produced Frequendly to win the fillies’ division at the Gold Coast.

Ross was disappointed to miss the price on his horse who got to as short as $1.70 after early punters dived into her when bookmakers originally offered $3.20.

“It just isn’t right. I am the one who gets up at 3am every day. I have ten two-year-olds at home and none of them will be trialling in public again,” Ross said.

Frequendly, a daughter of the late Sequalo, is being set for the Magic Millions Classic and Golden Slipper.

Wicked Intent, who won the males division, will also being aimed towards the Magic Millions.
