Volkere and Hi Son continue Qld rivalry

Arch-rivals Volkhere and Hi Son revived memories of two greats of Queensland racing after they again ran a quinella at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Volkhere ($3.20) beat Hi Son ($3.30) by 1-3/4 lengths in the Therock At Bombora Handicap (2200m) – the fifth time they have run first and second in an open staying race since the start of the season.

Queensland results show the famous 1970s Brisbane rivals Bengalla Lad and Charlton Boy hold the record for the same horses running quinellas with nine.

While Hi Son and Volkhere are not in the class as Doomben 10,000 winners Charlton Boy and Bengalla Lad, their quinellas are all in open company.

However, their rivalry is a major talking point in Queensland racing and will be again in two weeks when they again clash at Doomben over 2000m.

“It has been really great for off-season racing here. They are both so honest and punters love them,” said Volkere’s trainer Robert Heathcote.

“We lead three wins to two now but I reckon Tony (Hi Son’s trainer Tony Gollan) will be keen to get square.”

Apprentice Rikki Jamieson said Hi Son had tried hard but Volkhere had outstayed him in the final 200m.

Meanwhile, former Sydney trainer Mario Caltabiano had his first Queensland metropolitan winner when Prettyfamous ($7.50) won the Pethers Rainforest Retreat Handicap (1100m).

He trained at Warwick Farm for 25 years and 10 years at Canterbury before heading to the Gold Coast for a semi-retirement.

“I have six horses in work up here and I am enjoying it. That was my first Saturday winner but I have had a few at the midweek and the provincials,” Caltabiano said.

Apprentice Travis Wolfgram scored on Prettyfamous and then completed a double when Borehole ($31) led most of the way to win the Bartercard Handicap (1800m).

It took Wolfgram to within one win of losing his 3kg claim in the metropolitan area.
