New 2yo’s… No sweat sorting them out with the help of the Queensland Trial Review
The Gold Coast meeting this Saturday gives us our first major look at the new season 2yo’s. Whilst this is always an exciting time it can also be very difficult for punters trying to work out the wheat from the chaff… (to put it nicely)
With the help of the Queensland Trial Review, below is a comprehensive report on each runner to have gone around at the ‘official’ trial sessions as well as some brief insights into their breeding & possible winning chances.
Race 1 1.05pm Sequalo Legacy – Spirit Of Boom QTIS 2yo C & G Plate 900m.
No.1 Redsson – 1st (2.8L) 9/9 Gold Coast 900m 2yo trial Dead (TR100)
First start. Jumped well, led briefly before settling outside the leader with a fair gap to 3rd. Cornered a length away, went by leader 200 & cruised away to the line (wore heavy shoes). 28K purchase by the same sire as this year’s G1 Queensland Oaks winner Tinto, dam’s first foal to race. Looked good winning the trial wearing the heavy shoes, from the good gate looks very hard to beat here on debut.
No.5 Get Outa Utah – 2nd (3.3L) 23/9 Deagon 800m 2yo trial Slow (TR N/A)
First start. Jumped ok, no rush though settling down 3rd last off the fence 5 lengths from the lead. No closer straight, urged along stuck to his task ok (wore heavy shoes). Nothing of note in immediate bloodlines & the trial was only average. Monitor any betting moves.
No.12 Swans Lagoon – 4th 30/9 Gold Coast 900m 2yo trial Good (TR89.5)
First start. Jumped ok, pushed on settling 2 wide 2nd just over a length from the leader. Clear 2nd into the straight however gap now 4 lengths, pressured however couldn’t run on. 7K purchase by the same sire as G1 winners Red Tracer, Hurtle Myrtle, Shadowsinthesun & Shellscrape, dam’s first foal to race. Chased the runaway leader/winner in the trial & couldn’t finish off in the straight. Monitor any betting moves.
Race 2 1.40pm Group 1 Building QTIS 2yo F Plate 900m.
No.1 Aimalac Millie – 1st (3.0L) 9/9 Gold Coast 900m 2yo trial Dead (TR104)
First start. Jumped well, headed soon after settling last in the field of only 3 runners 2 lengths away. Took the shortcuts cornering taking over into the straight, hands & heels came clear (wore heavy shoes). Sire a Listed winner at Randwick over 1400m however no Stakes success at stud to date. Only beat 2 rivals in the trial however the time was good & in a capable Grafton stable. Pay to keep safe.
No.3 Frequendly – 1st (2.8L) 9/9 Eagle Farm 800m 2yo trial Good (TR98)
First start. Jumped well, straight to the front settled marginal leader fence. Railed well heading up 2 lengths clear, coasted past the 200 & down to the line scoring with plenty in reserve. By the same sire as dual G1 winner Spirit Of Boom & many other Group & Listed winners, full sister to local filly Sequends. Looked very good in the trial & draws a good alley, on what we’ve seen looks very hard to beat.
No.4 Madotti – 1st (3.3L) 23/9 Deagon 800m 2yo trial Slow (TR N/A)
First start. Jumped well, quickly crossed & led applying the brakes. Headed before booting through to regain lead turn, livened up briefly raced away without being pushed out. 80K purchase by a super sprinter who won dual G1 Doomben 10,000’s, 5 x G2’s & 2 X G3’s, has produced Group & Listed winners at stud. Did race away & score nicely in the trial, in good hands & must be included amongst the main chances.
No.5 Mia Madalena – 1st (6.0L) 30/9 Gold Coast 900m 2yo trial Good (TR89.5)
First start. Jumped well, quickly went forward to lead almost 2 lengths rail. Extended the margin to 4 lengths into the straight, coasted to the post increasing that margin all the way. Re purchased this year for 45K & is by G1 winner Denman who has produced 4 x Listed winners in his brief stud career to date. Bolted in the trial here on Tuesday & although the time wasn’t fast has to be respected with the margin being so great.
No.9 Military Miss – 2nd (0.8L) 9/9 Eagle Farm 800m 2yo trial Good (TR94)
First start. Missed the start 1 length & settled 3rd last 4 lengths off the pace. Taken to the outside rounding turn & given a slight urge closed off nicely & mostly under her own steam (wore heavy shoes). 180K purchase who is beautifully bred being by a Group 1 winner who has produced G1 winners at stud, dam a terrific sprinting filly who won twice at Group 1 level. Given an easy time in the trial & is trained here on the track, definite winning chance with luck from a bad gate.
No.10 Miss Amigo – 5th 9/9 Eagle Farm 800m 2yo trial Good (TR98)
First start. Missed the start 1 length & settled in the last few almost 4 lengths off the lead. Taken wider into the straight now 5 lengths away, urged along, brief whip 250 however couldn’t run on (wore heavy shoes). Beautifully bred 165K purchase by a dual group 1 winning 2yo (AJC Sires & Golden Slipper), dam won twice at Listed level down the Flemington straight (both 1100m). Missed the start in the trial so no guide there. Must respect off breeding alone.
No.11 Princess Boom – 5th (last – 14.4L) 16/9 Toowoomba 825m 2yo trial Good (TR107)
First start. Jumped ok, ridden hard from the outside gate however couldn’t muster any speed & tailed out 10 lengths last. Whip pulled into the straight however didn’t improve at all. 8.5K purchase by a G3 & Listed winning sire. Didn’t show up in the trial & happy to see go around on this occasion.
No.13e Limerick Star – 2nd (0.1L) 21/8 Gold Coast 900m Maiden trial Dead (TR100)
First start. Jumped well, dashed out to lead marginally fence. Ran rivals along to the turn cornering 2 lengths clear on the fence, under minimal urgings was collared on the line. By a G3 & Listed winning sire who was only run down late in her trial against older horses. Pay to monitor betting moves.
