Doomben review Saturday 30th August 2014
Track: Dead (5), Dead (4) after R3. Rail: Out 3.5m entire Pen: 5.30
Bias/Pattern: No bias however generally settling better than midfield was an advantage.
Race 1 The Courier Mail QTIS 3yo Handicap 1350m
RISA Time 80.52 (First 750 44.43/Last 600 36.09) Tempo: Good
Leaders SHADOWSIDE & SAMBUCCA SHOT set a good tempo up front giving those parked just off the pace their chance. Best placed of those was the winner SOLDI DOMANI who was able to box seat before shifting abruptly over heels on the turn getting to the outside, he dashed away near the 250m opening up a winning gap on his rivals. Placegetters LIFE AT SEA & DANSOLEI were both good, LIFE AT SEA was baulked for a run early in the straight & did lose 0.5-1.0L when the winner sprinted, he got going again late finishing off well, DANSOLEI missed the start & just got too far back, both are nice types who should make amends in the near future. Decent gap to 4th…
STEWARDS: HIGH DEGREE – Difficult to load. Reared as start effected and lost significant ground (3l). Trainer R. Smith advised the filly would have to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again.
LIFE AT SEA – Slow to begin.
DANSOLEI – Slow to begin. Inclined to lay out rounding home turn.
SAMBUCA SHOT – Inclined to lay out in the middle stages. Post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
SOLDI DOMANI – Shifted out abruptly rounding home turn.
COURT LANE – Hampered rounding home turn.
Race 2 The Jetty Spring On The Green One Metro Win Handicap 2100m
RISA Time 131.03 (First 1500 94.15/Last 600 36.88) Tempo: Genuine
Usual average at best distance affair in which UNO FIVE was able to score a good run in the race & pair out late to hold out the consistent LEE HO FOOK. HEATER was again cluttered up near the fence in the straight, he needs clear galloping room to show his best. NOVIKOV put in a shocker, I note in the stewards report both trainer & jockey reported he failed to handle the track conditions however no indication as to in what way? Strange comments seeing we were almost at the Dead (4) range… Can’t work that out.
STEWARDS: STRATEGIC SHADOW – Jumped away awkwardly. Rider L. Tarrant was fined $200.00 for failing to ride his mount out to the finish of the race.
NOVIKOV – Jumped away awkwardly. Rider L. Cassidy reported mount did not appreciate track conditions today and did not respond to his riding when placed under pressure. Trainer T. Crane agreed with the statement from the rider that the gelding did not appreciate the track conditions today. Post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
HEATER – Raced in restricted room in the early stages of the straight.
Race 3 Corona Beach Party F & M Class 6 Handicap 1200m
RISA Time 70.77 (First 600 35.77/Last 600 35.92) Tempo: Genuine
AVALADYLUCK finally broke through here rewarding those punters with VERY deep pockets, she settled handy enough before dashing away in the straight & holding off the fast finishing GOTITALLWRONG who charged to the line being nice & fresh. She’s a consistent type who is worth following this campaign. GALA AFFAIR was under pressure & looked like stopping in the straight, she rallied well late & will improve plenty with that run under the belt. BEACH BABE & PRETTY FACE were forgivable.
STEWARDS: PRETTY FACE – Held up for clear running from the entrance to the straight until the 200m. Post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
BEACH BABE – Held up for clear running from the 400m until near the 100m.
App M. McGuren was stood down by the Club’s doctor for the remainder of his events following his ride in this race
Race 4 Sono Restaurant Open Handicap 1350m
RISA Time 79.61 (First 750 44.95/Last 600 34.66) Tempo: Genuine
Whilst SALUTER & JETSET LAD set a genuine pace out front here they were able to up the tempo from before the home turn making it very hard for anything to make any ground from the back. What a difference riding JETSET LAD forward has made… He’s now 2 from 2 since the tactical change & hopefully now we can mark him down as permanent on pacer around this distance range & further. HARADA BAY & BLACK MAGIC were the only runners to make any ground, HARADA BAY steadily cut the margin all the way down the straight to less than a length on the line, he’ll be winning again shortly.
STEWARDS: JETSET LAD – Steadied leaving 1200m.
TURNITUP – Tightened for room leaving 1200m.
App B. Grylls the rider of SALUTER pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that after leaving the 1200m she allowed her mount to shift in when not clear of JETSET LAD, resulting in JETSET LAD having to be steadied to avoid the heels of SALUTER and tightened the running of TURNITUP. App Grylls’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of six (6) meetings to commence midnight 3 September 2014 and expire midnight 14 September 2014. In assessing penalty stewards took into account App Grylls’ guilty plea and good riding record.
HIDDEN WARRIOR – Overraced for a short distance after leaving 1100m.
Race 5 Qld Reef & Beef No Metro Wins Handicap 1350m
RISA Time 80.24 (First 750 45.55/Last 600 34.69) Tempo: Moderate
Positive ride from Jim Byrne on OUR BOY NICHOLAS from the inside gate finding the back of the speed settling down. Pulled around their heels into the straight he levelled up before racing away & looking very strong to the line. That’s his 3rd win in a row & I’m suggesting there will be more as he he’s shown the ability to clock impressive sectionals. TINTS was good, gave the leaders 6 lengths at the 600 & did have to come 5 wide rounding the home turn, finished of strongly in a race not really run to suit, well worth following. Forgive BIG DECISION, too far back the way the race was run & having first start for a month.
STEWARDS: POMPIDOU – Slow to begin.
ITCHINTOWIN – Jumped awkwardly, shifted out and bumped another runner.
FRENCH COMMAND – Hampered shortly after start by another runner.
DAISYODEE – Hampered shortly after start by another runner.
TINTS – Steadied away from heels approaching 800m.
OLD FEELING – Raced wide without cover throughout event.
Race 6 Martin Hellyer Retirement No Metro Wins Handicap 1615m
RISA Time 98.29 (First 1015 63.27/Last 600 35.02) Tempo: Genuine
Everything clicked for grey mare BINGO ROSE who raced away in the straight to score by almost 6 lengths! She’d been running on at her most recent outings & obviously the step up to the mile was what she was looking for all along, the question will be whether or not she can repeat the performance next time out. Hard to wrap anything else with the margin being so great.
STEWARDS: SISTER EMMA – Jumped away awkwardly.
VAZ DE TORRES – Checked when tightened for room near the 1400m. Approaching and rounding the home turn had to be steadied away from the heels of another runner, which shifted out.
QUICK WITTED – Steadied away from heels of another runner near the 1400m. Post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slightly short in its action in the off fore leg. App T. Wolfgram reported following the event that in his opinion QUICK WITTED would be better ridden on the speed as today the mare overraced when ridden with cover.
App T. Wolfgram the rider of QUICK WITTED was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out rounding the home turn when not fully clear.
RED HOT DAZZLER – Rider R. McMahon reported the gelding failed to finish the race off as expected.
HUSH POWER – Raced wide without cover throughout event.
Race 7 The Courier Mail Qld Taste Open Handicap 1615m
RISA Time 98.63 (First 1015 63.80/Last 600 34.83) Tempo: Moderate
Last start winner TAIL AND ALL set only a moderate tempo making things hard for those highly fancied runners settling worse than midfield. EPIC was the one who scored the best run parking behind TAIL AND ALL, once in the straight a gap appeared and he took over inside the 200m pinching a big enough break to hold off the fast finishing BILLY AUCASH who although very honest just cannot seem to break through. TRAKSTAR & KINGDOMS were always up against it the way the race was run however did make late ground, thought TRAKSTAR was the better of the two though as he cornered very wide.
STEWARDS: Correct weight was delayed to allow the App S. Payne the rider of BILLY AUCASH which finished second to view the official patrol film to see whether he had grounds against the winner EPIC approaching the 1400m. After viewing the patrol footage App Payne advised he did not wish to proceed.
BILLY AUCASH – Near the 1400m had to be steadied away from heels of another runner.
KINGDOMS – Inclined to shift ground under pressure in the straight.
WAR ENDS – Raced wide without cover throughout event.
EXTREME MOVER – Lost an off fore plate in running.
Race 8 SKY International C, G & E Class 6 Handicap 1200m
RISA Time 70.71 (First 600 36.05/Last 600 34.66) Tempo: Moderate+
Super win by the promising YOU DID WHAT here who gave his rivals a start & a comprehensive beating, he can really find the line this one & he has really stepped up this campaign, no reason why he can’t win again. STAR SAMMY couldn’t dash with YOU DID WHAT however keep in mind was carrying 6.5kg more suggesting his effort was also a good one. JUST A PERLA clocked in 4th after sitting on the speed, will strip fitter for the outing & looks set for another consistent campaign.
STEWARDS: THIS IS WAR – Jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with another runner. Raced wide throughout event.
BARON DOURO – Hung in under pressure in the straight.
PLATINUM STATE – Veterinary examination revealed mild/moderate heat stress and a poor post race recovery.
LORD LONHRO – Veterinary examination revealed slow post race recovery.
DEL PALIO – Veterinary examination revealed the gelding had sustained an injury to the near side eye.
