Quick look at today’s Townsville Cup

All roads lead to Cluden Park this Saturday for the running of this year’s Townsville Cup and Cleveland Bay Handicap. From a local viewpoint the Cleveland Bay holds most interest with Le Cap and Outstandingly making the trip for Mt Isa trainer Jay Morris. Whilst Outstandingly may find this a tough ask the same can’t be said for Le Cap who resumed with an impressive victory just under 3 weeks ago over 1000m on the track which should have him peaking nicely for the big one. Many of his main rivals have drawn awkwardly with Playtime being one such runner, narrowly beaten at Rocky two starts back before winning at Mackay latest has her right in the mix and a logical danger.

As always the Cup looks an open affair however I’ve been very impressed with the recent form handed in by Mackay galloper Weathervane who has won his last three on the trot. Although untried beyond the last start winning distance of 1960m the way he hit the line suggests he’ll have no trouble running out a strong 2100m on Saturday. Hopefully Trinity Bannon can find some cover from the wide gate and let him settle, from there he should be able to producing his big finish in the straight.
